Kinja'd!!!

I found it - the holy grail. PS2 backwards compatibility in hardware. Two weeks after finding that cheap fat PS3 at the Goodwill Outlet I have stumbled across the one I’ve wanted for years. Too bad I can’t use the hard drive loaded full of games that I had in the PS2 on this one - p robably...

I certainly don’t need three of these things. Heck, I probably don’t even need two, but I plan on using one upstairs as a media player once I get around to swapping TVs.

I failed to find one... so I bought a Slim, and resorted to keeping my PS2 with HDD adaptor around. I don’t seem to find time to use them, nowadays.

I still have all of my old consoles - 360, Dreamcast, 2600, PS1, PS2 - but like you, I really don’t have time to use them. The PS3 was bought primarily as a BluRay player, and I’ve mostly used it as a media player.

The PS2 (which was bought primarily as a DVD player) has a 120GB HD full of games, but I haven’t fired it up in at least 5 years; I don’t even remember what’s on it. I think the laser was acting up, hence the reason for going to the HD. I do have at least one box packed full of PS2 games which, if history is any indication, will not get played anytime soon even though I have the machine to do so now...

Impressive. The worry I have about those is reliability. My PS3 has died and it wasn’t even an especially early model, was an 80gb I think. The ol YLOD, it’s common.

They were more reliable than the 360 but I don’t think it was really good enough.

I’d still probably get one if they were cheap. But here they’re absurdly expensive. The idea of spending up for one then having it break scares me.

I have a backwards compatible that died the yellow light of death if anyone wants to try to repair it. Also controllers if anyone wants them.

I’d be interested in these items, especially the controllers. I have a friend that volunteers to do haircuts in the inner city for kids in the neighborhood and someone gave him a PS3 to keep the waiting kids occupied, but he doesn’t have any controllers and I said I’d find him some. Let me know...

I did pay $100 for this one, but considering that most places online want upwards of $250 for one I thought that this was a reasonable deal. Yeah, I’m taking a risk, especially given the age, but I’ve been lucky so far. My 360 is one that I got for free when the kid’s mother just bought him a replacement instead of getting this one fixed under warranty. I sent it in and got a replacement for nothing, and have been using it for over a decade.

Sure, I’d be happy to donate to that. They might need new batteries by now as they’ve been sitting in a closet for years but maybe they would while plugged in.

Nice. I'm playing some Borderlands 2 on my 60gb ps3 right now. I bought it right when the ps3 first came out and it's still a great system.

That’s an early one...? Prone to failures... good catch. Hopefully it stays reliable. I thought I had one, I’ve got an early non-ps2 compatible.

Nice the backwards compatible one! I have one as well that I bought new at the end of   2006 mainly to use as a Blu-Ray player and media center with my then-fancy 42” 720p TV. I did end up using it to play quite a few PS1 and 2 games over the first few years - I actually didn’t have a PS2 so I bought a bunch of used games that I had missed when new. I also messed with Linux on it a little until Sony took that option away. Ultimately I got sick of how loud it was and got a dedicated BD player and ran out of time to play many games. I did pull it apart of o clean it and redo the thermal paste around 2013  which helped but it was still relegated mostly to the guest room although my daughter and I played GT5 ok it a bunch for a month or two and I dusted off my FF8 disks for a playthrough . My 6 year old son discovered it recently and has been playing LittleBigPlanet.  Anyway thanks for bringing back the memories and nice find!

I still have a 60gb retrocompatible one with a 500gb one but I only use my CFW silver 80gb to play these days...

What? 360s were really reliable, once you added in some pennies and some better thermal paste instead of glued on foam that redirected the heat into the board. M y broken one lasted a really long time after it died and I did that.

Are the backwards compatible PS3's really going for $250 or more?! I have one that I haven’t touched in years. May need to consider selling it if it’s worth that much.

There i s a place online that seems to specialize in PS3s that is selling these early models for $269. I guess they do restorations and probably provide a warranty. Selling a used one yourself probably wouldn’t net that kind of cash, but if you find the right buyer you might get a premium over a non-PS2 compatible model.

Nice find and good price. I regret selling my backwards compatible PS3. I sold it about 4 years ago and there are a few PS2 games I get the urge to play randomly. Ah well, I don’t play enough to go shop for one though.

I think there used to be a way to play PS2 HDD games on this PS3 model. Something had to be downloaded from the PS Store so who knows if it’s even still available. Could always try jailbreaking it if you felt so inclined, though even that kind of stuff might be few and far between now too.

I sold mine on eBay for about $225 minus fees. The higher price sellers are refurb shops most likely.

Haha. They're reliable once they break and you modify them to be reliable ;)

Yeah those things are pretty hard to come by now. I have one in storage that YLOD’d back in 2015 and I was thinking about doing a motherboard transplant, but I think there’s an emulator now.
